Impenetrable barriers in phase space for deterministic thermostats

We investigate the relation between the phase-space structures of Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian deterministic thermostats. We show that phase-space structures governing reaction dynamics in Hamiltonian systems map to the same type of phase-space structures for the non-Hamiltonian isokinetic equations of motion for the thermostatted Hamiltonian. Our results establish a framework for analyzing ...

Hamiltonian dynamics of thermostated systems: two-temperature heat-conducting phi4 chains.

We consider and compare four Hamiltonian formulations of thermostated mechanics, three of them kinetic, and the other one configurational. Though all four approaches "work" at equilibrium, their application to many-body nonequilibrium simulations can fail to provide a proper flow of heat. All the Hamiltonian formulations considered here are applied to the same prototypical two-temperature "phi4...

Thermostats: Analysis and application.

Gaussian isokinetic and isoenergetic deterministic thermostats are reviewed in the correct historical context with their later justification using Gauss' principle of least constraint. The Nose-Hoover thermostat for simulating the canonical ensemble is also developed. For some model systems the Lyapunov exponents satisfy the conjugate pairing rule and a Hamiltonian formulation is obtained. We p...

Hamiltonian for a restricted isoenergetic thermostat.

Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations often use mechanisms called thermostats to regulate the temperature. A Hamiltonian is presented for the case of the isoenergetic (constant internal energy) thermostat corresponding to a tunable isokinetic (constant kinetic energy) thermostat, for which a Hamiltonian has recently been given.

New observations regarding deterministic, time-reversible thermostats and Gauss's principle of least constraint.

Deterministic thermostats are frequently employed in nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations in order to remove the heat produced irreversibly over the course of such simulations. The simplest thermostat is the Gaussian thermostat, which satisfies Gauss's principle of least constraint and fixes the peculiar kinetic energy. There are of course infinitely many ways to thermostat systems, e....
